First tip-off: no wings.
He does have arms that he REFERS to as "wings," but you know what? Birds do not have hands.

He also does not hop around like a bird does. Ever see a bird hopping around? It's always with two feet at once. Big Bird does not do that.
Also there are all these birdseed and canary "jokes." Yeah okay, cause he's totally a BIRD-bird. Let's see him act like one for once.
Sometimes the residents of Sesame Street do not look like the animals that they are supposed to be. Kermit does not look like a frog.
Some other animal puppets actually do look like animals.
I think everybody just accepted Big Bird being a bird because they were told he was. Same as Kermit being a frog. and Grover being a MONSTER. Rah.
